Comparative Numerical Analysis of RCC Roof Models

A wide spectrum of eco-friendly and innovative building systems is being introduced in the building sector as a consequence of environmental concern. The key to maintaining a comfortable temperature in a building is to reduce the heat transfer out of the building in the winter and reduce heat transfer into the building in the summer. Roofs are construction elements that close the building at the upper part, in order to protect against the bad weather – rain and snow, wind, sun, temperature variations, etc. The thermal performance in most of the cases remains undetermined. The size, capacity and cost of heating and cooling systems are determined on the basis of maximum rates of heat loss and heat gain, and can be reduced by increasing the over-all resistance to heat flow through the roof. RCC slab is a conventional roof type, commonly found in many places. The design of RCC is very flexible, alteration of which will yield significant changes in thermal performance for analyzing the thermal performance of various RCC roof types, and numerical simulations are made. The roof models, namely, RCC, RCC with false ceiling, RCC with thermal barrier, RCC with concrete hollow tile and RCC with hollow clay tile are made in GAMBIT. Then, all the required tests for accuracy of results are conducted, namely, GridIndependence test and the time-step variation test.
